Recognition is the whole hook
A talking object works on a mechanism no fantasy creature can borrow: the viewer already owns one. A fridge, a charger, a washing machine, a single sock. The first frame lands before any dialogue because the audience has a relationship with the thing on screen and knows exactly how it behaves.
That means the writing job is smaller and stranger than it looks. The object does not need a backstory, it needs a complaint that matches what it does. A kettle resents being ignored. A remote control has been under the sofa for a week and has opinions about that. The comedy is in the accuracy, not the invention.
